Creating whimsical dolls, according to Ms. Short, feels as though she has come full circle -- from learning to sew at her mother's knee ... through career stages of teaching, costuming, traditional and art quilting ... all the way to learning to play once more.

Part of the creative delight (the "play") is in naming the dolls, suiting names to their 'character traits' so to speak -- Mary Louise (Who Aims To Please), Fran Goddess of All Women, Irene the Shoe Queen, Belinda The Witch, Freda the Psycho Fairy, Joy Queen of Summer Fun, Madame Chamomilia (brewer of teas, Celestial Seasons of course!)...
Were you to commission a sculptured fabric doll from Ms. Short, you might suggest the overall 'personality' desired, perhaps providing some memorabilia for the doll's adornment.

In response to the events of Sept. 11, 2001, Ms. Short felt compelled to create The Rescue Angel, which then traveled with a friend going to New York City to volunteer at Ground Zero. The angel doll -- endowed with wings and work boots, and in her country's colors -- came to reside amidst the bustle of a re-supply center, a heartfelt tribute to the many rescue workers. Once the rescue and clean-up was completed, the supply depot was decommissioned and the whereabouts of the Rescue Angel is unknown. Ms. Short would very much like to hear from anyone with knowledge of the doll's present circumstances. |
