Always a highlight of Hodaka Days and always popular with spectators, the observed trials make use of the natural gullies and gravel banks near the grain elevator at west end of Athena's Main Street. It's rough and ready and both riders and onlookers love it. Jay Lael strategizes the novice, intermediate, and advanced lines with others including Ed Chesnut very occasionally putting the brakes on some of his wilder layouts! There were seven sections this year and the riders made the circuit twice; the only person to do the 14 rounds without any dabs was Jack Kelly in the Novice class. Does that make him an automatic move-up into Intermediate next year? George Bellinger (aka "Gray Steek"??), Ed Chesnut, Jerry Carter, Danny Messmore, and Jay Lael also ran the sections particularly well, with 11 to 13 cleans each. Spectators young and old scrambled from section to section or found high ground vantage points. One of the treats of the event was running into and chatting with Noland and Darlene Teal, a former Hodaka dealer, of Kennewick (see photo below).
