The sun was shining, a light breeze was blowing, and the temperatures were reasonable ... it was a great day to race! And race they did, with bikes and riders both pushed to capacity by determined competitiveness. The number of riders in 100 CC Reeds and 125 CC Reeds classes meant participants were divided into two preliminary heats, thereby shaking out to qualify in either "A" group or "B" group in a main race.
Jamie McAdams came "out of retirement" to race for the first time in 25 years. David Perrett flew in from Oil City, PA; he wouldn't have missed it. Kelly McKiernan's smiles outdid his daughter Kaylie's as she crossed the finish line. Danny Messmore's usual over-the-top grin was at half mast, as his tumble in the Observed Trials on Saturday damaged his wrist enough that he had to abandon racing this year; he promises to be on the track again next year!
Women were well represented this year--and comments overheard indicate there will be even more women entrants at Hodaka Days 2008! Jeff Harshman rode a Harry Taylor special. Nick Chapman rode Phil Chapman's Frankenstein (pictured on Bike Show page) and indeed, as Jay Lael suspected, "it went like stink." Nick and Jeff have a year-to-year rivalry that really shows out on the track. Nick Chapman was in his first ever 250 race this year. Paul Stannard abdicated racing this year, and loaned his bikes to Tommy Croft and Ron Pomeroy. Dave Rozier acted as their pit crew. As Ed Chesnut put it, "Talent attracts talent!"
Kelly Corwin--on a bike rumored to have been purchased just the night before--was way out front giving Ron Pomeroy fits in the group A Main segment of the 125 Reeds class, but suddenly blew something in the transmission and had to drop out of the race. Only a few moments later in same race, Tommy Croft (who had beaten everyone in the qualifying heat by a big margin) had a failure on HIS bike!
Milo Linville has sent an interesting tidbit of information: "In all, four bikes using Phil Chapman engines entered in five classes, and took home five trophies: Nick Chapman for three races: - 250 Class - 1st (Frankenstein, Nick's first 250 race); 125 Reed A Main - 2nd; 100 Reed A Main - 1st ... and Milo Linville for two races - 100 Reed A Main - 2nd; and 125 Reed B Main - 2nd (on 100 CC bike)."
Thal Anderson, Scrambles organizer, left it up to the riders whether they wanted a Grand Prix. And, no surprise, they did! Ron Pomeroy dedicated his Grand Prix win to his brother Jim.
