Northwest of the town, on Sherman Road, is the Athena Cemetery, founded in 1873 and fully indexed through 1988 by Garland Wilson of Milton-Freewater. Cemetery boards and indexes to most of plots are at the Athena Library. The sculpture shown is the gravesite of Pearl Frances Picard (Dec. 3, 1892 - July 14, 1931) and Henry Picard (Jan. 5, 1860 - June 12, 1911).
The headstones above memorialize Elnora Kimbeck (Oct. 14, 1869 - June 2, 1890) and Leora Williams who died Jan. 30, 1888 at the age of 21 years. Below is the gravestone of Darwin Richards, first white settler of the area; more about him has recently been learned and the material is available at the Athena Library.
