STOP PRESS! The Fireplace Fund has reached its goal! Thanks for all the support!

UPDATES AND NOTES

There's a photo album being kept by Judy Price at the library about the construction. Do check it out.

Recently gifted monies and pledges include $2500 from the city's Library Advisory Board and $1800 from AWERE designated for the Fireplace Fund. The PGE Foundation has awarded $5000 for furnishings. Also recently received are $5000 from Swindells Trust and memorials honoring Joyce Hansell, Ted Meinart, Lyle Shields, Pat Allen, Brian Montee, Howard Haworth, Monseignor Raymond Beard, and Alton and Maxine Lieuallen.

Some recent treasures have come in for our Local History collection. In addition, we get queries for local history information ... the most recent regarding a prisoner of war camp near the river in 1944. If you have info on this, please send an email to ALFA or drop a note off at the library.

Anyone with historic photos, articles, or other mementoes, please leave a note at the library or contact Sally Geissel -- it is possible that your special photo or document might be just what ALFA's next edition (for 2009) of the heritage calendar needs. That calendar's design and production will get underway in the summer. PRE-ORDERS are necessary in order to ensure you get a copy of the next calendar, as we only print the number ordered. The 2008 edition sold out and some latecomers were disappointed not to be able to buy one.

The FABRIC ARTS FAIRE on March 8th earned about $2800 for the Fireplace Fund. The Umatilla-Morrow chapter of Thrivent Financial Services will match $1600 of those profits. Not only was the financial side successful, but it was a FUN day despite the hard work required. Thanks to all donors, volunteers, and of course to the shoppers!

A very few notecards with Annie Mae Jensen's drawings of some of Athena's historical buildings are still on sale at the library. Bookmarks contributed by Cindy Vickery are also on sale. Proceeds benefit the Building Fund, which is now focused on adding needed furnishings, as the goal for construction costs has been attained, in large part due to terrific community support and contributions.
