ANNOUNCEMENTS and EVENTS (revised September 21, 2009)


Mark your calendars now for the October Fall Festival and Street Fair on Saturday, Oct. 3rd. Check with David Lynde at 566-3887 if you want a vendor table. Then come on down for food, sales booths, kids games, music, and other action about 10 am - 4 pm that day.

The Weston Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a dessert on Monday Sept. 28th at 6:30 pm in the Weston Community Hall to become better acquainted with the Athena-Weston school district staff. And there will be door prizes!

The library's storytime for toddlers resumed Monday Sept. 21st, 10 am and will continue weekly. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, parents, caretakers -- bring the little ones to socialize, listen, dance, create ... all sorts of Ready-to-Read activities.

The Chamber of Commerce resumes its monthly meetings in September on third Thursdays at 11:30 am at the Doubletree Cafe. Everyone is welcome to attend. Details of plans for the October Fall Street Festival will be covered.

Don't you think the welcome to Tiger Scot country signs entering town from hwy 11 and along 3rd street are great fun?

Two positions on city's staff are open .. one with police and one with public works. Stop by city hall to see job descriptions and get applications. The hiring period remains open-ended at this time.

Elizabeth McIntyre is replacing Cyndi Calvert on the city's Library Advisory Board.

Thanks to great job by lifeguards Sara Lyn Smalley, Jacob Brutscher, Forrest Gissel, Jordan Reger, and Jessica Wright at the city's pool this summer.

Athena Library book club's next meeting will be a discussion of The Hoot and Holler Opening Soon by Bonnie Letts on Monday, Sept. 21st, 6:30 pm at the library. Come one, come all! You are welcome to participate ... even if you cannot always attend and even if you have not finished reading the book.

Blue Mountain Mediation is holding a 32-hour orientation and training beginning October 16th and running on 17th and 24th as well. For a low cost entertaining evening, how about borrowing (free) DVDs or VHS tapes from library and hosting a movie night? A little popcorn, some chips, lemonade ... and you've got a fun evening with family, neighbors, friends. Over 150 new DVDs have been added at library as well as about 2 dozen classic movies .. the latter are definitely in the "oldy-but-goody" category!

Members of Athena and Weston city councils will hold a joint worksession on Saturday October 17th at 8:30 am in the basement of the Athena Christian Church. The two councils will explore ways the two cities can work together and perhaps streamline various projects and save monies at same time! The public is invited to come and offer ideas. Breakfast will be served at $5/plate. Phone your reservation to City Hall at 566-3862 so the Athena Cooking Club folks know how much food to prepare!

Linda McClure is now the second face you'll see in City Hall, alongside Dyann Swanson.

Isn't it great to see the RV park at north end of town nearly always full? It's great to have this new amenity in our town for visitors! If you know out-of-town folks coming to town, do contact Everett Pixler for reservations ... rates start at $20/night with reductions for longer stays.

The September art exhibit at the library shows paintings by Shari Dallas. Shari experiments with paints and strokes in amazing ways in these abstracts ... do come by and take a look. Also ... do check out the display of photos which is still on exhibit taken by library's SUMMER READING PROGRAM participants ... some are amazing ... especially when kids as young as six years get the credits!

ALFA is looking for assistance -- needed are volunteers to work on heritage calendar edition for 2010, a newsletter editor, people interested in working on oral histories, and someone to fill one board vacancy. Please contact Nancy Parker at the bank or Janet Mandaville if you are interested in learning more about ways to volunteer with ALFA. The next ALFA board meeting will be Thursday Oct. 15th at 6:30 pm at the library .. all are welcome to attend. Place your pre-orders for the 2020 heritage calendar from October 1st through November 1st at the library. Cost is $10, with a $2 added fee per calendar if your order needs to be mailed.

Thanks to the volunteers who put out and take in the American flags along our streets for holidays like 4th of July, Flag Day, Memorial Day, etc. It looks great and is much appreciated.

The Blattner wind energy group, which has used the library meeting room extensively, has made a generous donation to purchase a special piece of furniture that will make much easier display and search of the growing collection of music CDs. The donation will also purchase some special surprises for teens!

Get complete information about the "do not call" registry to avoid telemarketing calls at the government's phone registry website ... the latest on non-expiration of registrations for phone numbers, etc.

Public safety info from the city is now available from a service that messages you as you select--cell phone, email, text. Check it out at www.nixle.com ... or ask Officer Marc Calvert to explain it to you.

If you have ideas that would make good senior projects for high schoolers, let Dyann at City Hall or Carrie at the Library know. Such projects are a requirement for graduation and give a lot to the town as well!

The American Legion needs donations of wheelchairs, crutches, and walkers in good condition. Contact Tim Kennedy at 566-1919 if you can help out.

Cats and dogs both require licensing; see City Hall. And remember to keep yards mown and weeded ... the police officers can give tickets if if areas become too overgrown, especially the portion between front of yard/sidewalk/street.

The Future Farmers of America (FFA) youth have revamped the two outdoor bulletin boards with donation support from PGG and others and monetary support from Athena Chamber of Commerce and PARTNERS Promoting Athena. The work included repair of posts, wood framing, shingles, and painting and staining all parts. The same group has also refurbished and replanted the whiskey barrel sidewalk planters.
